Bass Pro Shops announces manager for new Sportsman’s Center location in Gainesville, Florida

Michael O’Brien to lead team of 150-plus at outdoor store scheduled to open in Alachua County later this year

Gainesville, Fla.  — Bass Pro Shops today announced Michael O’Brien has been named general manager for the new Bass Pro Shops Sportsman’s Center store scheduled to open later this year in Gainesville, Florida.

O’Brien, who has more than 20 years retail experience, will oversee all aspects of the 82,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops Sportsman’s Center. Located on the northwest quadrant of Interstate 75 and Archer Road, it will be the primary anchor for Celebration Pointe, a one-million-square-foot mixed use development that will include retail, restaurants, entertainment, a hotel and residential units.

“I am excited to lead the team bringing Bass Pro Shops to the Gainesville area. The region is home to incredible natural areas and passionate outdoor enthusiasts we look forward to welcoming when we open our doors,” said O’Brien.

O’Brien began his Bass Pro Shops career two years ago at the Palm Bay Bass Pro Shops store as merchandise manager.  Prior to coming to Bass Pro Shops, O’Brien held management positions at other national retail brands.

He will lead a team of 150-plus associates and build on a culture that has earned the company national recognition. In 2015 Bass Pro Shops was named one of “America’s Best Employers” by Forbes magazine for its excellence as an employee-focused company.

“Our team will share their extensive knowledge and love for the outdoors with our customers in an expansive environment with a wide range of products,” said O’Brien.

The Bass Pro Shops Sportsman’s Center will reflect the state’s local wildlife and the rich diversity of natural habitats. Features include hand-painted murals, museum-quality fish and wildlife mounts, a 13,000-gallon aquarium stocked with fish native to the area, and tributes to the area’s geographical points of interest.

In addition, the Sportsman’s Center will offer an incredible array of fishing, hunting, camping, and boating equipment that’s specific to the region as well as outdoor cooking gear, outdoor apparel and footwear, and nature-themed gifts.

Since the beginning, Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris has been dedicated to inspiring people, especially youth and families, to love, enjoy and conserve the great outdoors. That commitment, demonstrated over the course of several decades, is a big reason why Bass Pro Shops is known as the outdoor industry’s corporate conservation leader.

O’Brien, a former firefighter and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, is an avid bass angler and also enjoys saltwater fishing and turkey hunting.  He and his wife Christina and daughter Kayla enjoy many outdoor activities.
