Martin Truex Jr. dominates Coca-Cola 600 and drives the No. 78 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Toyota to victory at the Charlotte Motor Speedway
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Martin Truex, Jr., driver of the No. 78 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Toyota Camry, clinched his first win of the season by winning the Coca-Cola 600 May 29, 2016 at the 1.5-mile quad oval race track in Concord, North Carolina. Truex drove his way into the NASCAR record books as he led more laps and miles than any other driver in the history of NASCAR. Truex led 392 of 400 laps.
“It’s the kind of weekend you dream about and I want to thank all the people that believed in me,” said Truex in an emotional interview. He went on to say that he had faith and confidence in his crew.
Truex returned to Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend for the longest race of the season and as part of NASCAR’s “600 Miles of Remembrance.” For the second year in a row, NASCAR paid tribute on Memorial Day weekend to those who bravely served and died defending our country. Truex’s winning No. 78 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Toyota’s windshield bore the name of fallen service member, U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Jeffrey Edward Bohr, who was killed in action on April 10, 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“It’s a big day, Memorial Day, and it’s really great to bring that name (Bohr) home in victory lane,” said Truex.
In 21 starts at Charlotte, Truex has two top-five finishes and seven top-10’s. He also led the most laps (131) in last year’s Coca-Cola 600.
Prior to his win tonight, his best finish of the season so far was runner-up in the Daytona 500. His losing margin of one-hundredth of a second was the closest finish in the history of NASCAR’s biggest race.
He celebrated his 10th year in 2015 on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit with his best performance to date. He qualified for the Chase and advanced to the Championship 4 round last year at Phoenix International Raceway. The 35-year-old driver from Mayetta, N.J. garnered 22 top-10 finishes out of 36 events including one win and eight top-fives. He finished a career high fourth in the final Sprint Cup point standings. He’s in his third season with Furniture Row Racing.
Bass Pro Shops has a longstanding relationship with Truex, an avid outdoorsman who was previously sponsored by the Springfield, Missouri-based company from 2004 through 2009 when he drove for Dale Earnhardt Inc. During that time, Truex was a two-time Xfinity Series champion having won the title in 2004 and 2005. Bass Pro Shops was the primary sponsor of those two championships.
“All of us at Bass Pro Shops are extremely proud of Martin,” said Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris. “We dedicate this race to all our associates and customers who are racing fans.”
