Martin Truex, Jr. wins the Southern 500 at Darlington

 

 

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.  – Martin Truex, Jr., driver of the No. 78 Toyota Camry, captured his second win of the season at Darlington Raceway near Darlington, South Carolina September 4, 2016.


Truex conquered the egg-shaped oval, nicknamed the “Track Too Tough to Tame,” to win the Bojangles’ Southern 500 which is considered the final crown jewel of the season. Truex had finishes of second in the Daytona 500, first in the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte and eighth in the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis.


Tonight’s win at Darlington is Truex’s first on the 1.366-mile track and the fifth of his career.


In 24 starts this season, Truex owns three top-fives and 10 top-10 finishes. He is Chase bound with a ranking of eighth in driver points and 10th in Chase playoff points. Two races remain before NASCAR’s version of post-season competition begins.


The Mayetta, N.J. native is in his third season with Furniture Row Racing. He celebrated his 10th year in 2015 on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit with his best performance to date. He qualified for the Chase and advanced to the Championship 4 round last year at Phoenix International Raceway.
